Fine Art

Fine Art is the discipline of making work that takes ideas, materials and the world seriously. It is not simply a technical training in how to produce images or objects; it is an open-ended investigation into what art can do, what it can say, and what it means to develop an artistic voice within the context of a rich and complex contemporary art scene. Fine Art students learn to think visually and conceptually, to take risks and reflect on failure, and to situate their own practice within the history and theory of art.

At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year full-time programme is available with a foundation year for students who benefit from a preparatory period before engaging with the full degree curriculum. The foundation year builds practical skills, critical awareness and studio confidence, setting you up for the main programme where you will develop your individual practice across a range of media and approaches. Studio work sits alongside critical and theoretical study, developing your ability to articulate what you are doing and why, both in writing and in verbal critique.

The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities, giving you significant professional experience in the arts sector before you graduate. Sheffield's thriving arts and cultural scene provides an active context for your studies and professional networking.

Graduates of Fine Art programmes pursue a wide variety of careers. Many develop as practising artists, working through galleries, residencies, public commissions and project-based work. Others move into education, arts administration, curation, community arts, design, and the creative industries more broadly.
