About this course

Fine art is the practice of making work with visual and material means as a primary mode of expression, inquiry, and communication. It encompasses painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, video, installation, performance, and the experimental and hybrid forms that contemporary artists have developed to engage with the world they inhabit. Fine art is not simply a set of technical disciplines but a way of thinking: it develops creative intelligence, critical self-awareness, and the sustained practice of making and evaluating work that can sustain an artistic career over time.

At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year, full-time BA gives you the opportunity to develop your artistic practice in dialogue with tutors, peers, and the wider contemporary art world. You will work across a range of media and approaches, developing your distinctive artistic voice alongside the technical skills, critical vocabulary, and contextual understanding that professional practice requires. The programme gives you the opportunity to exhibit at the annual degree show, which is attended by arts professionals from across the country, and in regular professional-standard exhibitions in the White Column gallery, giving you genuine exposure to the professional art world before you graduate.

A year abroad is also available, giving you the chance to develop your practice in a different cultural and artistic environment. The typical entry tariff of 104 points reflects an open approach to admissions that values creative potential.

Fine art graduates pursue a range of paths. Many develop professional practices as exhibiting artists, typically combining studio practice with teaching, arts administration, community arts work, or other employment. Others move into curatorial practice, arts management, art therapy, design, film, art education, or the creative industries.

The visual thinking, creative problem-solving, and critical self-reflection skills developed through fine art study are valuable in a wide range of professional and cultural contexts. Postgraduate study in fine art, curatorial practice, or art education is a natural next step for those who wish to develop their practice further.
