About this course

Financial mathematics applies the tools of advanced mathematics to the analysis of financial markets, instruments, and risk. It is a discipline that has grown enormously in importance since the development of quantitative finance in the latter decades of the twentieth century, and it underpins the pricing of derivatives, the management of investment portfolios, the modelling of credit and market risk, and the algorithmic systems that drive much of modern financial trading. The work draws on probability theory, stochastic calculus, differential equations, statistics, and numerical methods, and it requires both mathematical rigour and an understanding of the financial contexts in which the mathematics is applied.

At Cardiff University, this four-year programme includes a year of study abroad, which the title reflects directly. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study financial mathematics or a related discipline in an international academic environment, broadening your perspective and your professional network in a field that is genuinely global. The curriculum builds from a strong foundation in mathematics, including calculus, linear algebra, probability, and statistics, through to more advanced topics in mathematical finance, including stochastic processes, financial derivatives, risk theory, and computational finance.
