About this course

Finance is the study of how individuals, organisations and markets allocate resources over time under conditions of uncertainty. It encompasses investment theory, the pricing of financial assets, corporate funding decisions, risk management and the analysis of financial data, drawing on economics, mathematics and statistics to produce rigorous, evidence-based insights into how money flows through economies. For anyone who wants to understand the logic of markets or build a career in the financial sector, a degree in finance provides a direct and substantive preparation.

At the University of Leicester, this three-year full-time BSc gives you grounding in the main theories and practices of finance while placing particular emphasis on investments, data analytics and trading. You will develop the quantitative skills needed to analyse financial data and model markets, and you will have the opportunity to improve your professional competence alongside your technical knowledge. The programme includes a placement year, which allows you to apply your skills in a real professional environment and build the contacts and experience that employers in the financial sector value.

A year abroad is also built in, adding an international dimension to your understanding of finance and expanding your personal and professional network.

Finance graduates are among the most sought-after in the graduate job market. Investment banking, asset management, corporate finance, risk management, financial consultancy and the insurance sector all recruit heavily from finance programmes. The quantitative skills the degree develops also translate well into roles in financial data analysis, fintech and economic forecasting.

Accountancy and professional financial qualifications sit alongside a finance degree naturally, and many graduates pursue further professional exams while beginning their careers. Postgraduate study in finance, economics, financial mathematics or business administration is a further option for those who wish to develop specialist expertise.

Highly recommend
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the course strikes a good balance between theory and practical application. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good transport links…

Would do it again
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: the careers office is relentless about getting you internships. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” local cost of living is m…
