Filmmaking

Filmmaking is a creative and technical practice concerned with every aspect of producing moving image work, from developing a story and writing a script through directing, shooting and editing to the distribution of finished films to audiences. It is a discipline that develops both artistic vision and the collaborative, professional and technical capabilities needed to bring that vision to life in a medium that requires many different skills to work together. Whether the aim is narrative fiction, documentary, experimental film or screen content for emerging platforms, filmmaking asks you to communicate with audiences at scale and with emotional depth.

At the University of Sussex this three-year, full-time programme develops you from a passionate storyteller into a professional communicator capable of making films that reach global and diverse audiences. You will gain the conceptual and technical tools to produce screen content that represents diverse voices and perspectives, reflecting Sussex's commitment to social awareness and the responsibility filmmakers carry. The programme includes a foundation year for those who would benefit from additional preparation before the main degree, as well as a sandwich placement year, a year abroad and work placements, giving you direct professional experience in the industry and an international perspective on filmmaking traditions and practices.

Graduates work as directors, producers, screenwriters, directors of photography, editors, sound designers, production managers, documentary makers and content creators across film, television, streaming, online media and the games industry. Some build independent filmmaking practices or found production companies, while others move into adjacent roles in arts management, film education, commissioning and distribution. The combination of creative, technical and professional skills the degree develops is valued across the screen industries and beyond, and postgraduate study in film, screenwriting or screen studies is a further option for those wishing to specialise or pursue academic careers.
