About this course

Filmmaking is the practice of creating visual stories for the screen, combining technical craft with creative vision to produce work that can entertain, inform, challenge, and move audiences. It is one of the most collaborative of all the arts, bringing together directors, cinematographers, sound designers, editors, and producers in a shared creative endeavour, and one of the most technically demanding, requiring command of camera, lighting, sound, and editing tools alongside the conceptual and narrative skills to develop ideas and shape them into finished films. The range of filmmaking practice is vast, from personal essay films and experimental work to documentary, drama, and commercial production.

At Leeds Beckett University, this three-year full-time degree takes a hands-on, immersive approach, placing you in professional-standard studios and production environments from the start of the programme. You will develop your creative voice and master the technical and collaborative craft behind drama, documentary, and experimental film, working through the full creative process from initial concept to final cut. Directing, cinematography, sound, editing, and production are all explored, giving you a deep understanding of how films are made across these interlocking craft areas.

Teaching is delivered by industry-experienced tutors, and the course mirrors professional working practices, encouraging the kind of collaborative problem-solving that film production demands. A year abroad extends your cinematic perspective by engaging with film culture and education in another national tradition.

Filmmaking graduates enter careers in film and television production, documentary making, digital content creation, advertising, corporate video, and the growing screen production sectors in streaming and online platforms. Roles include director, cinematographer, editor, producer, sound designer, and production coordinator. The transferable skills in storytelling, collaboration, project management, and visual communication that the degree develops also open pathways in broadcasting, public relations, communications, and education.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in film, screenwriting, or documentary, deepening their specialist expertise for senior creative roles.
