Film

Film studies is a discipline that treats cinema as a serious object of cultural, aesthetic, and critical inquiry. Rather than simply watching films, you learn to analyse them: how images, sound, narrative, and editing work together to create meaning; how films reflect and shape social attitudes; how the film industry operates; and how the medium has developed and changed over more than a century of production. At the University of Hull, the BA Film is a three-year full-time programme that develops both theoretical knowledge and technical skills, giving you the critical tools and practical experience to engage with film at a professional level.

The theoretical component of the programme draws on film history, film theory, cultural studies, and critical analysis to develop your capacity to engage with cinema across a range of genres, periods, and national traditions. You will study how films construct meaning through formal choices, how movements and schools of filmmaking have developed in different countries and historical moments, and how films operate within and against social and political contexts. The technical component gives you hands-on experience in filmmaking, developing skills in cinematography, editing, sound design, and production, using the facilities the university provides.

The combination of critical depth and practical competence is designed to produce graduates who can work in the film industry and who can think seriously about what film does and how it does it.

Film graduates move into careers across the media and creative industries. Film production, editing, screenwriting, television production, documentary making, arts journalism and criticism, film programming, distribution, and exhibition are all career paths that film studies graduates pursue. Some work in digital content creation, advertising, and marketing, where the visual communication skills developed in the degree are directly applicable.

Others move into education, museums, archives, or cultural organisations where engagement with film and moving image is central. Postgraduate study in film studies, media production, screenwriting, or creative writing is a route some graduates take, as is further professional training in specific craft disciplines.
