Film and television studies combined with music is a genuinely rich interdisciplinary pairing, bringing together two of the most significant and culturally pervasive art forms of the modern era. Film and television studies examines how moving image media are made, how they create meaning, how they engage audiences, and how they function as institutions and cultural forces. Music studies develops analytical and critical engagement with music across genres, histories, and cultural traditions, exploring how music communicates, how it has evolved, and how it intersects with broader social and cultural life.
Together the two disciplines create exceptional opportunities for exploring how film and music interact in soundtracks, music video, documentary, and the overlapping industries that produce them.
At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme is led by lecturers in film and television studies who are leading researchers in their field, bringing this expertise into their teaching. The programme has strong connections with Glasgow's creative and cultural organisations, whose representatives contribute to the programme through talks from policymakers and screen practitioners on core courses in media and cultural policy. You will develop rigorous analytical and critical skills in both disciplines, studying film history and theory, television form and genre, music history and analysis, and the industries and institutions that shape both.

With a typical entry tariff of 200 UCAS points, this is a highly competitive programme at a leading research university. Graduates pursue careers in broadcasting, music and film journalism and criticism, arts programming, cultural policy, music production, film and television production, music video, education, academic research, and the many creative and communications roles in the media and music industries. Many continue to postgraduate study in film, music, media studies, or creative industries management.
