Film & Television Studies/History of Art

Film and Television Studies combined with History of Art is a degree that brings together two disciplines united by their concern with the visual image and its cultural, historical and aesthetic dimensions. Film and Television Studies examines cinema and broadcast media as artistic, industrial and cultural forms, developing analytical tools for understanding how moving images create meaning, reflect and shape societies, and function within the economic systems of production and distribution. History of Art examines the still image and the material object across a much wider historical span, analysing works of painting, sculpture, photography and architecture in their context and asking what they communicate about the values and experiences of the societies that produced them.

At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad and is taught by leading researchers in both fields, who bring current academic expertise directly into their teaching. The programme benefits from strong connections with Glasgow's creative and cultural organisations, with contributions from policymakers and screen practitioners who bring the realities of the contemporary media and cultural industries into the curriculum. You will develop rigorous visual literacy, critical analytical skills and a historical understanding of how images, objects and moving pictures have functioned in societies across time.

Film and Television Studies and History of Art graduates go on to careers in screen industries including film and television production, programming, distribution and criticism, alongside roles in museums, galleries, heritage organisations, arts administration and cultural policy. The combination of screen media expertise and art historical knowledge is particularly valuable in public sector cultural organisations, broadcast media with cultural remits and academic research. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in film studies, art history, media studies or cultural policy, and others enter teaching, journalism and publishing.
