Film Studies and Spanish

Film Studies and Spanish is a degree for students who want to understand cinema as both a cultural form and a global industry while also gaining genuine linguistic competence in one of the world's most widely spoken languages. Spanish opens access to an extraordinarily rich body of film culture, from the Golden Age of Spanish cinema and the works of Pedro Almodovar to the vibrant cinemas of Latin America, and combining the two disciplines gives you analytical tools that are mutually reinforcing: literary and cultural theory enriches your reading of film, and film offers vivid, contemporary contexts for language acquisition.

At the University of Manchester, this four-year programme includes both a sandwich placement year and a work placement component, giving you structured opportunities to apply your language skills and industry knowledge in professional settings. You will develop your Spanish to an advanced level through language classes, cultural study, and the direct experience that placement provides. On the film studies side, you will explore classical and contemporary cinema across a wide range of film cultures, examining how films are made, what they mean, and how they circulate, from Hollywood productions to world cinema and Spanish-language film.

The programme develops close analytical reading, comparative cultural thinking, research skills, and the ability to communicate clearly in two languages. These are capabilities that travel well across sectors. Graduates move into careers in the creative industries, including film distribution, programming, and production, as well as journalism, publishing, arts administration, cultural diplomacy, international business, and the charity sector.
