Film Studies and Russian

Film studies and Russian makes for an intellectually distinctive pairing, combining one of the most significant artistic and cultural forms of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries with one of the world's richest languages and literary traditions. Cinema is a global medium, and studying it requires both analytical rigour and cultural breadth: the same film reads very differently depending on the critical, historical and cultural frameworks you bring to it. Russian language and culture provides a particularly powerful lens, encompassing some of the most innovative cinema in film history, from the Soviet montage directors of the 1920s through to contemporary Russian and post-Soviet filmmakers.

At the University of St Andrews, you will develop advanced skills in film analysis alongside genuine fluency in Russian. The film studies strand, as the university notes, uses a variety of critical, theoretical and historical approaches to examine global film cultures, and you will engage with cinema from many countries and periods, developing a sophisticated understanding of how films create meaning through image, sound, narrative and cultural context. The Russian strand develops your language competence alongside your knowledge of Russian history, literature, society and politics, providing the cultural depth that allows you to engage with Russian cinema and its broader context on its own terms.

This four-year degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study or live in a Russian-speaking environment and to experience international academic life first-hand.

The combination develops close reading, sustained analytical argument, cultural literacy and the ability to write with precision and flair. These are skills that transfer across a wide range of professional contexts.

Graduates go on to careers in film criticism and journalism, broadcasting, arts administration, translation and interpreting, diplomacy, international business, education and cultural organisations. Further study in film studies, Russian, Slavic studies or cultural theory is also common.
