Film production is the craft and discipline of creating moving image content, from the initial idea through to a finished work ready for audience, festival, or distribution. It encompasses every stage of the filmmaking process: developing a concept and writing a screenplay, planning and organising a shoot, directing performers and camera, recording sound, editing picture and audio, and completing the post-production chain that delivers a polished film. Professional film production is inherently collaborative, requiring a team of specialists to work together under time and budget pressure, and learning to function effectively within that structure is as important as any individual technical skill.

At Southampton Solent University, this three-year full-time degree provides hands-on training using industry-standard equipment and facilities, and a foundation year is available for those who need to build their foundational knowledge before entering the main programme. Film production graduates work across the screen industries in a wide range of roles. Many work as freelance directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, or sound designers on short films, documentaries, commercials, and low-budget features before building to larger projects.
