About this course

Film production is the craft and practice of making films, encompassing every stage from the initial concept and script through to the final edit and the choices of sound design and colour grade that shape how an audience experiences the work. It is a collaborative discipline: professional filmmaking requires writers, directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, and many other specialists to work together effectively, and studying it develops not only technical skills but the ability to communicate a creative vision, manage resources and people, and deliver a finished piece of work. Cinema is one of the most powerful and culturally influential art forms, and the skills of screen storytelling have become more broadly applicable than ever as video content pervades every aspect of digital communication.

Anglia Ruskin University's four-year full-time Film Production programme provides training in the full range of filmmaking crafts. You will develop skills in scriptwriting and story development, directing for both studio and location, cinematography, editing, sound design, and producing, learning to work across these roles and to understand how each contributes to the whole. The programme is built around substantial practical project work, giving you the experience of making films at different scales and in different genres, and building a portfolio that demonstrates your creative and technical range.

You will also engage with film history and theory, understanding the traditions within which contemporary filmmaking operates and developing the critical awareness that informs mature creative decisions.

A typical entry tariff of 104 points makes the programme accessible to students with creative aptitude and commitment, and you will graduate with both practical skills and a body of work.

Graduates pursue careers as directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, screenwriters, and production assistants in film, television, online video, corporate production, and documentary. Many also move into related roles in visual effects, animation, and screen media education. Postgraduate study in film or screen production is also an option.
