Film

Film is one of the defining cultural forms of the past century and a half, and studying it at university is both a creative and an intellectual undertaking. Making films and understanding them are complementary activities: the history and theory of cinema informs your practice, and practice gives your critical engagement with films a grounded, experiential quality. A film degree develops your ability to tell stories on screen while also training you to understand how cinema works as an art form, an industry, and a cultural force.

At Edge Hill you will develop your own voice as a filmmaker while exploring a diverse range of film narratives from across the history of cinema. You will study film history, theory, and criticism alongside practical production work in directing, scriptwriting, cinematography, editing, and sound. The programme encourages creative risk-taking and the development of a distinctive approach to storytelling, supported by analytical frameworks that help you understand what you are doing and why.

The programme is offered part-time and includes a sandwich placement year and a year abroad, giving you real professional experience in the film industry and the opportunity to engage with cinema culture in an international context. The placement element is particularly valuable for building the industry connections that a career in film depends on.

Graduates pursue careers as directors, writers, producers, editors, directors of photography, and in development, distribution, and film programming. Many combine creative work with teaching, arts administration, or roles in television, advertising, and digital media. The skills the degree develops, including storytelling, visual communication, project management, and critical analysis, are also transferable to a wide range of careers in the creative industries and beyond.
