About this course

Film and theatre making is a discipline that addresses the shared and distinct challenges of bringing stories to life on screen and on stage. Film and theatre are connected art forms, both concerned with narrative, performance, direction, and production, but they differ profoundly in their relationship with time, space, audience, and technology. Understanding both, from the inside as a maker, gives you a richer creative toolkit and a more versatile professional profile than specialisation in either alone.

At Queen's University Belfast, this three-year full-time BA combines the strengths of two highly regarded departments to offer an interdisciplinary education in production practice across both media. You will learn the basics of directing and acting, developing the creative and collaborative skills that underpin work in both film and theatre, alongside the technical and production elements specific to each form, from camera operation and editing to set design and stage management. The programme has strong industry connections, with guest lectures, workshops, and placement experiences that bring working professionals into your education and give you insight into how the industries operate.

Film screenings and professional theatre productions are built into the programme, developing your critical eye as well as your practical skills. With a typical entry tariff of 152 UCAS points, this is a competitive programme at a university with a strong record in both film and drama.

Graduates from film and theatre making programmes pursue careers across the screen and stage industries. Directing, producing, acting, stage management, cinematography, editing, arts administration, and drama education are all natural destinations. The dual focus of the degree is a genuine advantage in a creative economy where makers who can work across media are increasingly valued.

Many graduates build portfolio careers that combine different kinds of creative work. Postgraduate study in film, theatre, or related disciplines is available for those who wish to specialise further.

The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: the studio culture is incredible β€” you learn as much from your peers as your tutors. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” the city …
