Film and Television Studies with a Year Abroad

Film and television studies is the academic discipline devoted to understanding moving image media as art, industry, and cultural force. It asks how films and television programmes are made, what formal and aesthetic choices their makers have available to them, how they construct meaning, how they reflect and shape culture, and how they have developed historically as technologies, industries, and art forms. It is a discipline that combines close formal analysis of texts with broader engagement with production histories, audience reception, genre theory, and the political economies of film and television industries worldwide.

At the University of East Anglia, this programme is offered as Film and Television Studies with a Year Abroad, extending the degree to four years of full-time study. The year abroad gives you the opportunity to study in a different country, engaging with film and television in a different academic and cultural context, and experiencing how other national cinemas and television cultures are studied and understood. You will develop skills in textual analysis, historical research, critical writing, and theoretical argumentation, as well as a broad knowledge of significant films, filmmakers, genres, and movements across cinema and television history.

Graduates from film and television studies go on to careers in film production, broadcasting, journalism, film criticism and writing, education, cultural programming, museum and gallery work, arts administration, and the wider media and creative industries. The critical analysis, research, and communication skills the degree develops are also valued in advertising, marketing, publishing, and public relations. Some graduates continue to postgraduate study in film studies, media studies, or creative arts, while others pursue professional training in film production or journalism.
