Film and Television Studies and English

Film and television studies and English is a degree that connects the critical study of screen media with the study of literary and cultural traditions in English. Film and television studies asks how moving image media work: how stories are told through editing, cinematography, sound, and performance; how genres develop and are subverted; how the screen represents society, history, and the imagination; and how audiences make sense of what they watch. English develops the skills of close reading, historical contextualisation, and critical argument that are directly transferable to the analysis of any medium, including the moving image.

At Brunel University London, this full-time, three-year degree allows you to combine practice and theory in both disciplines. On the screen side, you will study audio-visual practices alongside theoretical modules that address how screen media have been theorised and understood historically and in the present. On the English side, you will study the major historical periods of English literature through to recent poetry, fiction, and drama, developing the critical thinking, communication, and collaborative skills that the degree programme describes as essential to professional life.
