About this course

Film and television production is the practice of making moving image content for the full range of screens and platforms, from cinema and broadcast television to streaming services and digital channels. The field encompasses pre-production, production, and post-production, and the ability to work across all three phases, understanding the craft and logistics of filmmaking from script development and scheduling through shooting, editing, and delivery, is what distinguishes a well-rounded production practitioner from a narrower technician.

At Teesside University, this three-year full-time programme develops your production skills across a range of roles and contexts. You will work on collaborative projects with fellow students, developing team-working, communication, project management, and negotiation skills alongside your technical and creative practice. These professional capabilities are central to the screen industries, where almost everything is made collaboratively and where the ability to communicate clearly, manage relationships, and meet deadlines is as important as creative talent.

A sandwich year and work placements are available, giving you the opportunity to gain professional experience in film, television, or related production environments during your studies. You will develop skills in cinematography, directing, editing, sound, and production management, learning to operate in industry-standard workflows and to make work to professional standards.

Graduates go on to careers as directors, producers, cinematographers, editors, sound designers, and production managers across film, television, commercial production, and digital content. Many build careers in the growing regional and national screen sectors, while others work for broadcasters, production companies, or post-production facilities. Some develop freelance practices spanning multiple production contexts, while others move into film education, distribution, or the digital content sector.

Postgraduate study in film production or screen studies is a route for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue research.
