Film and Moving Image Production

Film and moving image production is the practice of making films and other moving image works, from short fiction and documentary to experimental video and screen-based installation. It is a discipline that is simultaneously technical and creative, requiring proficiency in the crafts of cinematography, sound, editing and production design alongside the storytelling intelligence to conceive and develop compelling visual narratives. Making films well means understanding both the tools of the medium and the ideas, histories and artistic traditions that give those tools meaning.

At Norwich University of the Arts this four-year full-time programme gives you a thorough and progressive education in film and moving image production. You will develop practical skills in directing, camerawork, sound recording and design, editing and post-production, working on projects that increase in ambition and complexity as you progress. Alongside practical work you will engage with film history and theory, studying the work of filmmakers across different traditions and examining the critical and analytical frameworks that help you understand what films do and how they do it.

Graduates go on to work across the screen industries as directors, producers, editors, cinematographers, sound designers and production managers in film, television, documentary, commercial production, online content creation and arts and cultural organisations. Some build independent practices as filmmakers; others move into roles in arts education, film curation, visual journalism or the technology companies that power streaming and content platforms. Many take the practical and critical skills developed in film production into careers in photography, advertising, interactive media and related fields.
