Film and English with Year Abroad
Film and English together form one of the most coherent and intellectually rich combinations in the arts and humanities. Both disciplines are fundamentally concerned with storytelling: how narratives are constructed, how meaning is made, and how the forms through which stories are told shape what those stories can say. English literature provides centuries of written texts to read closely and argue about; film studies extends the canvas to include the moving image, asking how visual and sonic language, editing, performance, and genre work in cinema and on screen.

At the University of Southampton, this four-year full-time degree includes a year abroad, which adds a genuine extra dimension to the experience. A year studying at a partner institution in another country exposes you to different literary and cinematic traditions, different academic cultures, and the independence that living and studying in a new environment develops. You will explore writing across historical periods, from early poetry to contemporary fiction and drama, learning to read analytically and argue carefully about how texts work.
Alongside this you will develop a critical eye for film, learning to analyse how meaning is constructed across the full range of cinema's technical and narrative resources. A typical entry tariff of 152 points applies.
