Fashion textiles design sits at the intersection of artistic creativity, material knowledge and the commercial realities of one of the world's largest creative industries. Fashion and textile designers create the fabrics, prints, knitwear, surface treatments and garment concepts that define how clothing looks and feels, working across the full range of markets from luxury and couture to high street and sportswear. At the University of the West of England, Bristol, this three-year, full-time programme develops your skills as an agile creative with both the technical abilities to design responsibly and the vision to contribute to the future of fashion and textiles. You will explore the properties and possibilities of different materials, develop skills in print design, knitwear, weave, garment development and sustainable design approaches, and build a portfolio of work that demonstrates your creative range and professional capability. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you direct experience in the fashion and textiles industry before graduation and the professional networks that will support your career.

Graduates work as textile designers, print designers, knitwear designers, fashion designers, surface pattern designers, trend forecasters, buying assistants, sustainable fashion consultants and creative directors across fashion brands, textile manufacturers, design studios and retailers. The combination of material knowledge, creative skill and sustainability awareness is increasingly valued as the industry faces growing pressure to transform its environmental practices. Some graduates build independent design practices or continue to postgraduate study in fashion, textiles or sustainable design.
