About this course

Fashion styling and creative direction sit at the visual and conceptual heart of the fashion industry, responsible for the images, concepts, and stories through which clothing and brands communicate their identity to audiences. Stylists select and arrange garments, accessories, and looks for editorial shoots, advertising campaigns, and commercial projects; creative directors shape the overall visual direction of brands, publications, and productions. At Southampton Solent University, the BA Fashion Styling and Creative Direction is a three-year full-time programme that also includes a foundation year, developing the full range of creative and professional skills this field requires.

The programme develops your practical skills in styling, art direction, make-up and hair design, photography, and shoot production alongside the conceptual and analytical abilities that distinguish creative directors from technicians. Trend forecasting, branding, and an understanding of the commercial context in which fashion imagery is produced are all part of the curriculum. You will build your ability to conceptualise and direct creative projects from initial idea through to finished image or campaign, working with a variety of collaborators and developing the leadership and communication skills that creative direction demands.

The portfolio you build during the programme is your primary currency in the industry, and the degree is structured to develop it progressively through projects that reflect the kinds of work you will encounter professionally.

Graduates move into careers across fashion, media, and the creative industries. Fashion stylist, fashion editor, art director, creative director, content director, and brand consultant are among the roles accessible to graduates with this qualification and portfolio. Fashion magazines, advertising agencies, luxury brands, e-commerce businesses, and the entertainment industry all employ professionals in these areas.

Some graduates work freelance from an early stage, building a client roster across commercial and editorial work. Others pursue postgraduate study in fashion communication, creative direction, or arts management. The combination of practical skills, creative vision, and professional awareness that the programme develops provides a strong foundation for a career in the highly competitive and image-driven world of fashion.
