Fashion Photography

Fashion photography is one of the most visually distinctive and commercially significant branches of photography, occupying the space where clothing, identity, aspiration, and visual culture converge. It shapes how we see fashion, how brands communicate their values, and how models, stylists, designers, and photographers collaborate to produce images that are simultaneously commercial and artistic. Studying it at degree level means developing both the technical photographic skills and the aesthetic sensibility to work within and against the conventions of the form.

At Leeds Arts University, this three-year full-time programme immerses you in the practice of fashion photography through hands-on experience, live briefs, exhibition opportunities, educational trips, and commissions. You will develop your ability to work with light, compose images, direct shoots, and work collaboratively with the other creative professionals, including stylists, makeup artists, and designers, whose work converges in a fashion image. The programme encourages collaboration and students have worked with designers and brands, which gives you the experience of real professional briefs and the professional relationships that are central to working in this sector.

You will build a strong portfolio over the course of your studies, which is the essential currency for entering the fashion photography world, and you will develop a clear creative voice and approach that distinguishes your work. Publishing and exhibition opportunities give your work genuine audiences during the degree, not just after it.

Graduates pursue careers as fashion photographers working with magazines, brands, and designers, as well as in commercial photography more broadly. Some move into art direction, photo editing, creative production, and styling. Others apply their visual skills in advertising, portrait photography, and the broader creative economy.

Some pursue postgraduate study in photography or visual arts.
