About this course

Fashion design is a discipline that combines creative vision with technical mastery. Designing clothes is not simply a matter of aesthetic preference: it requires an understanding of the human body, of materials and their properties, of pattern cutting and construction, of how garments move and wear, and increasingly of how fashion intersects with sustainability, ethics and global supply chains. The best fashion designers are creative thinkers who are also rigorous technicians, capable of developing an idea from sketch through toile to finished garment.

At the University of Southampton, the three-year full-time degree provides a dynamic and questioning environment for developing your creative ideas and your technical capabilities. You will learn to design, pattern-cut, construct and present garments, developing a design voice and a technical foundation that positions you for professional practice. The programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you the opportunity to develop professional experience in the fashion industry before graduation.

This direct contact with professional practice is invaluable in a field where industry experience and professional networks are essential.

Southampton's fashion programme emphasises innovation and positive change, encouraging you to think critically about the environmental and social responsibilities of fashion design. Sustainability has become a central concern in the industry, and graduates who understand it are particularly well positioned.

Graduates of fashion design degrees work in fashion design studios, fashion houses, retail brands, costume design, textiles design, fashion journalism, buying and merchandising, fashion styling and fashion education. Many graduates develop independent labels or work as freelance designers. Postgraduate study in fashion design, fashion management, textiles or related fields is a natural continuation for those who want to develop specialist expertise or move into higher-level design roles.

Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if you share a ho…
