Exploration Geology

Exploration geology is the applied Earth science concerned with finding and evaluating deposits of mineral resources, oil, gas, and other economically valuable geological materials. It draws on the full range of geological knowledge, including sedimentology, structural geology, geochemistry, and geophysics, and applies it to the practical challenge of locating resources that are hidden beneath the surface of the Earth. As the global economy transitions towards low-carbon energy and materials, exploration geologists are also increasingly involved in finding the critical minerals, including lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements, that modern battery technologies and electronic systems require.

At Cardiff University this three-year full-time degree gives you a rigorous grounding in geology alongside the specific skills and knowledge that resource exploration requires. You will study the processes that form and concentrate mineral deposits and hydrocarbon accumulations, the geophysical and geochemical survey methods used to investigate the subsurface, the interpretation of borehole and seismic data, and the geological mapping skills that remain fundamental to field-based exploration work. Cardiff has a strong tradition in applied Earth sciences and connections to the resources industry that enrich the programme.

Exploration geology graduates are in demand across the global resources and energy industry. Career paths include roles in oil and gas exploration and production, hard rock mining and mineral exploration, environmental and engineering geology, and the growing critical minerals sector. Exploration work is often international, with opportunities in Africa, Australia, the Americas, and Central Asia as well as in Europe.

Postgraduate study in exploration geology, petroleum geoscience, or economic geology is available for those who want to specialise further, and a PhD is a common route for those aiming at research or senior technical roles in the industry.
