About this course

European philosophy has shaped the intellectual foundations of Western civilisation, from the ancient Greeks through the medieval scholastics to the great modern traditions of rationalism, empiricism, idealism, existentialism, and phenomenology. Studying philosophy at degree level trains you to think with precision about the deepest questions in human experience: what exists, what we can know, what makes actions right or wrong, and what it means to live a good life. Pairing philosophy with Spanish extends this intellectual formation with access to one of the world's most widely spoken languages and the extraordinary literary, philosophical, and cultural traditions of the Spanish-speaking world.

At the University of Dundee, this four-year full-time programme develops both your philosophical reasoning and your Spanish language proficiency to a high level. In the philosophy component, you will engage with major thinkers and traditions across ethics, metaphysics, epistemology, political philosophy, and continental European thought, developing the ability to read, analyse, and argue about complex ideas with care and rigour. In the Spanish component, you will build genuine linguistic proficiency alongside engagement with the literature and cultures of Spain and Latin America.

The degree includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in a Spanish-speaking country and deepen your language skills and cultural understanding through immersive experience. Dundee offers a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment for humanistic study.

Graduates from European Philosophy with Spanish go on to careers in law, journalism, the civil service, education, diplomacy, publishing, cultural organisations, business, and any field where the ability to think clearly and communicate effectively in more than one language is valued. Philosophy graduates are particularly well regarded in law and public policy, where the ability to construct and evaluate complex arguments is directly useful. Some graduates pursue postgraduate study in philosophy, European studies, or related humanities disciplines, or go on to professional qualifications in law, education, or management.

Highly recommend
I've grown so much academically and personally here. The best part: the teaching staff are genuinely world-class and accessible. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” the city is a br…

Would do it again
This is the perfect place to study this subject. The best part: the cohort are bright and motivated, which makes the learning environment great. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” good tr…
