About this course

Equine science applies the biological and physical sciences to the study of the horse, addressing anatomy and physiology, reproduction, nutrition, behaviour, biomechanics, health and performance. Horses occupy a distinctive position among domestic animals, combining significant economic importance in sport, leisure, breeding and agriculture with a long history of human partnership that makes their welfare and performance a matter of both commercial and ethical concern. Equine science gives students the evidence-based understanding needed to contribute to that care and management at a professional level.

At Nottingham Trent, this four-year programme begins with a foundation year, which provides the biological and scientific grounding needed to succeed in the main degree. The foundation year is designed for students who have strong interest and motivation but whose entry qualifications do not yet fully meet the standard degree requirements, and it ensures a solid foundation before the specialist equine content begins. You will study equine anatomy and physiology, genetics and breeding, nutrition, health and disease, behaviour and welfare, biomechanics, exercise physiology and the science of training.

Practical experience with horses is central to the programme, and you will develop hands-on skills alongside your theoretical understanding. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points.

Graduates work in equine management, stud and breeding operations, racehorse training yards, equestrian centres, veterinary practices (in support roles), equine nutrition and feed companies, equine welfare organisations, research institutions and equine pharmaceutical businesses. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study or professional training in areas such as veterinary science, equine physiotherapy or animal behaviour. The scientific rigour of the programme, combined with its practical equine focus, provides a strong foundation for a range of careers in the equine industry.
