Equine Science and Business

Equine Science and Business is a degree designed for students who want to combine a rigorous scientific understanding of the horse with the commercial and management skills needed to operate professionally in the equestrian sector. The equine industry in the UK is a significant economic force, encompassing thoroughbred racing, sport horses, leisure riding, equine veterinary services, training and competition, and a substantial network of supporting businesses. Operating within it effectively requires both sound scientific knowledge of equine physiology, health and welfare and the business acumen to manage enterprises in a competitive and sometimes challenging commercial environment.

At the Royal Agricultural University in Cirencester, a specialist land-based university with deep roots in agricultural and rural management education, this three-year full-time programme blends equine science with business management principles relevant to the full breadth of the equestrian sector. You will study equine anatomy and physiology, nutrition and health management, behaviour, breeding science and welfare, alongside business strategy, finance, marketing, and enterprise management. There is also the option to study some livestock science alongside the equine content, giving you a broader animal science foundation that extends your professional versatility.

The RAU's location in Gloucestershire, at the heart of one of the UK's most active equestrian regions, provides excellent access to the industry through connections to yards, studs, competitions and equine businesses in the area.

Graduates work in stable management and yard management, equine health and welfare organisations, the racing industry, equine nutrition and feed companies, veterinary support roles, event management, and equine business consultancy. Some develop their own equestrian enterprises. Others pursue postgraduate study in equine science, animal science, or business, deepening their specialism or moving into research.
