Environmental Science with Foundation Year

Environmental science addresses some of the most urgent challenges facing the planet: climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, resource depletion, and the sustainable management of land, water, and air. It is an inherently interdisciplinary subject, combining physical and biological sciences with social, economic, and ethical perspectives to understand how human activity interacts with natural systems and what can be done to make that interaction more sustainable. Environmental scientists contribute to the evidence base that underpins policy, to the design and monitoring of environmental management interventions, and to the public understanding of the issues at stake.

At the University of Keele, this four-year full-time degree includes a foundation year that builds the scientific knowledge and academic skills needed before the main programme begins, making it accessible to students who are highly motivated but may need additional preparation. The main degree deepens your scientific knowledge of environmental systems while developing your awareness of the social, economic, and ethical dimensions of environmental problems and solutions. You will gain practical skills through fieldwork, laboratory activities, and work placements, which are built into the programme.
