About this course

Environmental science takes a rigorous, evidence-based approach to understanding the natural world and the ways in which human activity is changing it. It draws on ecology, chemistry, geology, atmospheric science and biological sciences, combining them to address some of the most urgent questions of our time: how are ecosystems responding to climate change, what are the long-term consequences of pollutants entering food chains, how can we manage land and water sustainably, and what can the geological record tell us about past environmental changes and future risks. The discipline demands both scientific precision and a willingness to engage with complexity.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, the four-year full-time programme is shaped by its remarkable setting. The Highlands and Islands of Scotland contain some of the most ecologically significant and diverse landscapes in the UK, from ancient Caledonian pinewoods and peatlands to marine environments and mountain ecosystems. Studying environmental science here means working with real habitats and real environmental challenges, not just laboratory simulations.

You will develop skills in ecological survey, environmental monitoring, data analysis, geographic information systems and scientific communication, alongside a deep understanding of the physical and biological processes that govern natural systems.

The region's environmental challenges, including issues around deer management, rewilding, peat restoration, renewable energy development and coastal change, provide a meaningful local context for the global environmental questions the degree addresses.

Graduates work in environmental consultancy, conservation organisations, government agencies, national parks, water authorities, renewable energy companies, research institutes and NGOs. Environmental monitoring, ecological assessment, habitat restoration and sustainability management are among the professional roles available. Postgraduate study in environmental science, ecology, conservation biology or environmental management is a well-established next step.
