About this course

Environmental science at Queen Mary University of London combines the study of Earth processes, ecology, and human impacts to equip you with the interdisciplinary understanding needed to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the planet. Climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, pollution, and sustainable resource management all require environmental scientists who can work across disciplinary boundaries, combining physical, biological, and social scientific perspectives to understand complex environmental problems and propose effective responses.

This four-year, full-time MSci programme develops your understanding of both Earth and environmental processes and ecology, giving you a strong foundation in the physical and biological sciences that underpin environmental analysis. You will study atmospheric science, hydrology, soil science, ecology, environmental impact assessment, and the policy and governance frameworks that shape how environmental challenges are addressed. The MSci structure allows you to engage with current research at a more advanced level than a standard undergraduate degree, often including a substantial research project that gives you genuine experience of how environmental science is practised at the frontier of the field.

Graduates of environmental science programmes move into roles in environmental consultancy, conservation, government environmental agencies, planning, renewable energy, water management, and international environmental organisations. The MSci qualification particularly strengthens graduate profiles for roles in research, specialist consultancy, and positions that require advanced scientific expertise. Many graduates continue to doctoral research in environmental science, ecology, or climate science, building the specialist knowledge needed for academic or senior professional careers.

The combination of Earth system understanding and ecological knowledge that the Queen Mary programme provides is well suited to roles addressing the interconnected challenges of biodiversity and sustainability.

Would do it again
Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: critique sessions are tough but push your work to the next level. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” local cost of living is …
