About this course

Environmental science is the interdisciplinary study of the natural world and the impact of human activity upon it. It integrates ecology, chemistry, geology, hydrology, and social science to understand the environmental challenges facing contemporary societies, including climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, resource depletion, and land use change. The discipline develops both the scientific understanding of environmental processes and the analytical and policy frameworks needed to respond to the environmental pressures that are among the defining issues of our time.

At Manchester Metropolitan University, this four-year, full-time degree includes a foundation year that provides a preparatory route onto the main degree for students who do not have the prerequisite subjects at A-level or who need additional academic preparation. The foundation year offers a supported entry into environmental science study, ensuring that you develop the scientific knowledge and skills needed to engage fully with degree-level material. Through the main degree, you will study core environmental sciences alongside specialist topics in ecology, environmental chemistry, pollution assessment, land management, and the policy and governance frameworks that shape environmental practice.

Manchester is a major city with significant industrial and environmental heritage, providing a rich context for environmental science study. The typical entry tariff of 104 points reflects the foundation year entry requirements.

Environmental science graduates work across a wide range of sectors. Environmental consultancy, local and national government environmental agencies, conservation organisations, water companies, energy companies, and international development bodies all employ environmental scientists. Roles include environmental consultant, ecological surveyor, pollution assessor, environmental policy adviser, and sustainability manager.

Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in environmental science, ecology, environmental management, or related fields, developing specialist expertise for research or senior professional roles.

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” the city is a brilliant student city …
