About this course

Environmental geoscience addresses some of the most pressing questions facing humanity, exploring how the physical Earth, its oceans, atmosphere, biology, and chemistry interact to create the environments we depend on, and how those environments are being altered. This four-year full-time degree at the University of Bristol includes a study abroad component that broadens your experience of different landscapes, geological settings, and research traditions, adding an international dimension to your formation as a scientist.

You will examine the interactions between geology, biology, chemistry, and physics at Earth's surface and in its oceans and atmosphere. The degree equips you with a deep understanding of how natural systems function and how human activities influence them, from land use and resource extraction to emissions and climate change. You will develop skills in fieldwork, laboratory analysis, data interpretation, and scientific writing, learning to work with the kind of complex, multi-variable systems that environmental challenges demand.

Bristol's strong research culture means you will be learning alongside scientists actively working on these questions, and your programme will draw on current research as well as established disciplinary knowledge.

Environmental geoscience graduates are well placed for careers in environmental consultancy, climate science, natural resource management, hazard assessment, water management, and policy. Public agencies, energy companies, conservation organisations, and research institutions all recruit people with this combination of Earth science knowledge and environmental understanding. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study or research, contributing to the science that underpins environmental decision-making at national and international levels.
