About this course

Environmental geoscience sits at the intersection of geology, earth science and environmental science, addressing the physical processes that shape the Earth's surface and near-surface environments and the ways in which human activity interacts with and alters them. The discipline draws on geology, hydrology, soil science, geochemistry and remote sensing to understand phenomena such as landslides, flooding, groundwater contamination, coastal erosion, climate change impacts and the geochemical cycling of elements through the environment. It is a field with enormous practical relevance as societies grapple with the environmental consequences of development and climate change.

At Birkbeck College, this four-year programme includes a foundation year and combines research-led teaching, hands-on fieldwork and industry-inspired experiential learning to equip you with the knowledge and skills to address today's pressing environmental challenges. You will develop an understanding of the geological and environmental processes that shape the Earth's landscapes and ecosystems, alongside practical skills in fieldwork, laboratory analysis, remote sensing and environmental data interpretation. Environmental geoscience graduates work in environmental consultancy, geological surveying, contaminated land assessment, groundwater management, coastal and flood risk management, mineral resource assessment and academic and government research. Many pursue postgraduate study in environmental geoscience, earth sciences, hydrology or a related applied science, which is often necessary for specialist professional roles. The combination of geological knowledge and environmental understanding is increasingly valued in organisations working on the remediation of contaminated sites, the management of water resources, the assessment of natural hazards and the monitoring of environmental change.
