About this course

Environmental geography sits at the meeting point of physical and human geography, concerned with understanding the natural environment and the ways in which human activity shapes, degrades, and sometimes restores it. It draws on earth sciences, ecology, hydrology, and climatology alongside social science and policy analysis, making it one of the most genuinely interdisciplinary subjects available at undergraduate level.

This programme at Cardiff University includes a year of study abroad, embedded within the course structure. That year gives you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution, engaging with environmental issues and research traditions in a different country and broadening your understanding of how environmental challenges are addressed across different policy and cultural contexts. With a typical tariff of 136 points, the programme attracts students who are scientifically capable and motivated by the pressing questions the subject addresses.

You will study how landscapes form and change, how water, soils, and ecosystems function, how climate and environmental systems interact, and how human pressures including urbanisation, agriculture, pollution, and resource extraction affect those systems. Fieldwork and practical skills are central to geography degrees, and you will develop proficiency in data collection, geographical information systems, mapping, and environmental monitoring. The Cardiff environment, close to the Brecon Beacons, the Severn Estuary, and the south Wales coast, provides diverse field sites within easy reach.

Graduates from environmental geography programmes are in demand across a wide range of sectors. Environmental consultancy, natural resource management, conservation, local and national government planning, climate adaptation, water management, and international development all draw on this combination of skills. Roles in the third sector, research institutions, and government agencies also attract environmental geography graduates.

Further study at postgraduate level in environmental management, climate change, sustainability, or a related field is a common progression for those who want to specialise or move into research.

Would do it again
Coming here has changed how I think. The best part: the final show is a proper platform β€” industry people come to see it. If I'm honest, the timetable has some awkward 9am / Friday afternoon slots. On the city β€” good transport links make it…

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if…
