Environment Culture and Communication
Environment, culture and communication is an interdisciplinary degree designed for those who want to engage seriously with the climate crisis and to develop the knowledge and skills needed to communicate about it effectively. Climate change is not just a scientific and technical problem; it is equally a cultural, emotional and communicative challenge, requiring people who can understand the science, articulate it compellingly to diverse audiences and navigate the cultural, political and social dimensions of the response. This programme prepares graduates to function as effective climate advocates in a world that needs them urgently.
At Birkbeck College this programme is studied part-time, making it accessible to those who are already working or who have other commitments. You will develop a foundational scientific understanding of the human-driven causes of climate change and its environmental impacts alongside communication skills, creative capacities and the cultural and emotional sensitivities needed to engage diverse audiences and communities. The programme also builds a professional network, reflecting the understanding that working in the climate space requires collaboration across disciplines and sectors.
Graduates in environment, culture and communication work in environmental communications, climate journalism, policy advocacy, NGOs and third-sector organisations, sustainability roles in business and public institutions, science communication, community engagement and creative media. The combination of environmental knowledge, cultural understanding and communication ability is valued across the growing range of roles where the climate crisis intersects with social, cultural and political life. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study in environmental humanities, sustainability, science communication, climate policy or environmental law, deepening their expertise in fields where the demand for graduates with this distinctive combination of skills continues to grow.
