About this course

Environment and sustainability is a field of study that has never been more pressing or more intellectually exciting. The accelerating pace of environmental change, from climate disruption and biodiversity loss to pollution and resource depletion, demands scholars and practitioners who can understand the natural systems under threat, the human drivers of environmental change, and the policy and management responses that might reduce harm and enable recovery.

At Birkbeck College in London, this programme is led by internationally recognised researchers and offers a wealth of practical experience alongside a deep understanding of what drives environmental change and how to manage natural systems under unprecedented pressure. The programme includes a foundation year, providing an accessible entry route for students who need to build their scientific foundations before entering the main degree. It is offered part time, which suits those who are already working in relevant fields or who have other significant commitments alongside their studies.

You will study ecology, climate science, environmental policy, sustainability management, and the social, economic, and political dimensions of environmental challenge, developing both the scientific literacy to understand what is happening to the natural world and the analytical and policy skills needed to respond to it effectively. Being based in London, one of the world's major centres of environmental research and policy, provides access to research institutions, government bodies, and NGOs that are at the forefront of these questions.

Graduates from environment and sustainability programmes go on to careers in environmental consultancy, sustainability management, conservation, urban planning, government, NGOs, international development, and research. Further study options include postgraduate programmes in environmental management, sustainability, ecology, climate policy, and environmental law.

The programme genuinely lives up to its reputation. The best part: the lecturers include people actively shipping research to industry. If I'm honest, a few modules feel under-resourced compared to the flagship ones. On the city β€” good tran…

Would do it again
The course has exceeded my expectations. The best part: coursework pushes you to actually build real systems, not just write essays. If I'm honest, accommodation allocation was stressful in the first year. On the city β€” good transport links…
