English Literature/Gaelic

English literature and Scottish Gaelic is a combination of rare richness, bringing together the study of a global literary tradition in the English language with engagement with one of the most distinctive and historically significant minority languages of the British Isles. English literature at degree level develops your capacity for close reading, critical analysis, and cultural interpretation across a wide range of periods, traditions, and forms. Gaelic, as both a language and a literary tradition, opens a very different set of cultural and historical perspectives, connecting you to the indigenous heritage of Scotland and to a living language community with its own poetry, prose, and oral traditions.

At the University of Glasgow, you will explore all aspects of literature in English from early modern to postmodern, benefiting from the department's expertise across American, Irish, and postcolonial literatures, critical theory, creative writing, and the relationship between literature and other arts, media, and science. The Gaelic strand develops your linguistic competence alongside engagement with Gaelic literature and culture, in a department with particular expertise in Scottish and Celtic studies. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at a partner institution and to broaden your academic and cultural perspective in ways that enrich both your literary and linguistic understanding.
