English Literature and Language

English literature and language is a dual-stranded discipline that takes language seriously both as an aesthetic medium and as a social and communicative system. Literature invites close reading, interpretation and critical engagement with works of imagination, asking how meaning is made and how texts reflect, shape and challenge the worlds that produce them. Language study examines English more analytically, considering how its structure works, how it varies across social groups and geographical communities, and how it functions in the production of meaning at the sentence, text and discourse levels.

The two strands are not separate: the best literary criticism draws on linguistic awareness, and the most interesting language analysis attends to the aesthetic dimensions of texts.

The part-time mode suits students who are working, caring for others, or who prefer a more gradual pace of engagement with demanding texts and ideas. You will study literature by focusing on both the wider social context in which it is produced and the specific language choices that shape its meaning and effect.
