English Literature and French

English Literature and French is a degree that places the study of one of the world's great national literatures alongside the linguistic and cultural depth of French, opening up a rich comparative perspective on two traditions that have been in dialogue for centuries. English literature from the Norman Conquest onward has been shaped by French influence, and French literature has in turn engaged with English writing from Shakesperare to the modernists. Studying both brings these connections into focus while also developing your ability to work seriously in two different linguistic and cultural registers.

At the University of Manchester, this four-year full-time programme develops your literary and linguistic skills across both disciplines within one of the UK's leading universities in both. In English Literature you will read fiction, poetry, and drama across a wide historical range, studying how literary form and language create meaning and how texts relate to their historical and cultural contexts. In French you will develop your linguistic competence to a high level, working with literary texts, film, and cultural material in French, and engaging with the history and cultural geography of the French-speaking world.
