English Language and Literature

English language and literature in combination is a study of how one of the world's most widely spoken languages works and what has been made with it across time and place. Language study examines the structures, histories, and social functions of English, asking how it evolved, how it varies across speakers and communities, and how it shapes and is shaped by the cultures it inhabits. Literary study asks what literature does with language, how texts create meaning, and what the reading of fiction, poetry, and drama contributes to an understanding of human experience.

Together, they produce a rounded perspective on communication, culture, and creativity.

At the University of Southampton, this three-year full-time programme develops your knowledge and skills across both strands of the subject. You will explore the historical development of English from the early medieval period to the present day, examine how the language varies geographically and socially, and engage with writing from across the full range of English-speaking cultures worldwide. At the same time, you will study literary texts in depth, developing the close reading and critical analysis skills that define literary scholarship.

The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to experience different varieties of English and different literary and cultural traditions through immersive international study.

You will develop skills in critical thinking, research, written argument, and the analysis of both linguistic data and literary texts. These capabilities are valued across many professional fields where communication, interpretation, and the ability to engage with complex material are essential.

Graduates go on to careers in publishing, teaching, journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, the civil service, and a wide range of cultural and creative industries. Many continue to postgraduate study in English literature, linguistics, creative writing, or related disciplines.
