English Language and Literature

English language and English literature is an integrated degree that treats the scientific study of how language works and the interpretive study of how literature uses language as mutually illuminating pursuits. Language shapes literature and literature exemplifies language, and studying the two together allows you to move between the rigour of linguistic analysis and the sensitivity of literary interpretation in ways that enrich both. At the University of Sheffield, this three-year, full-time degree is designed so that language and literature are studied both separately and in their relationship to each other. You will build a degree that follows your own interests, engaging with modules that treat each discipline in its own right alongside those that explore how the two interact, whether in the history of the English language, the linguistics of literary style, or the political dimensions of language use.
