English Language and Linguistics
English language and linguistics is the scientific study of the English language itself, examining its history, its internal structure and the social and cognitive processes that shape how it is used. Unlike English literature, which focuses on texts and their interpretation, English language and linguistics is primarily concerned with language as a system, asking how it is organised at the level of sounds, words, grammar and meaning, and how it varies and changes across communities, time periods and cultural contexts. At the University of Southampton, this three-year full-time programme is taught by one of the UK's leading departments in languages, cultures and linguistics.
You will develop a rigorous understanding of the history and development of English from its Anglo-Saxon origins to the global language of the present day, exploring the structural and social forces that have driven its remarkable diversity and spread. The programme covers a wide range of topics, including phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, sociolinguistics and language acquisition, and you will choose from a range of modules that allow you to follow your particular interests and career goals. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the opportunity to experience how English functions in a different national and linguistic context and to deepen your understanding of language variation and contact.
Graduates in English language and linguistics are valued in fields where understanding how language works is directly applicable. Teaching English as a foreign or additional language, speech and language therapy, and language education are common career directions for those drawn to applied roles.
