English Language and Linguistics

English language and linguistics is the scientific study of language itself: how it is structured, how it is used, how it changes over time and across communities, how children acquire it, and how it shapes and is shaped by the social worlds in which it exists. Unlike English literature, which focuses primarily on literary texts, linguistics takes language as its direct object of study, asking systematic questions about phonetics and phonology, morphology and syntax, semantics and pragmatics, and the social, psychological, and historical dimensions of language in use.

At the University of Leeds, this three-year programme introduces you to the history, structure, and use of the English language, building a grounding in areas including phonetics, syntax, and the methods of language research. You will also engage with topics such as language acquisition, psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, and discourse analysis, developing a thorough and systematic understanding of how English works as both a structural system and a social practice. The programme develops your ability to conduct original language research and to analyse data with rigour and precision.

The degree includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you substantial professional and international experience. These elements allow you to encounter different varieties of English and different linguistic environments firsthand, enriching your understanding of language in use and developing the professional skills that careers in language-related fields require.

Graduates from English language and linguistics degrees move into careers in speech and language therapy (with further professional training), language teaching, publishing, editing, lexicography, communications, journalism, natural language processing, and data analytics roles where language understanding is relevant. The analytical and research skills developed through linguistics are highly transferable. Postgraduate study in linguistics, applied linguistics, speech and language therapy, or computational linguistics is a natural route for those who wish to specialise.
