About this course

English and TESOL is a degree that combines the rigorous academic study of English language and literature with the professional knowledge and skills required to teach English to speakers of other languages. TESOL, or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, is one of the world's largest professional fields, with demand for qualified English language teachers across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America, and beyond, as well as in the UK, where English language education supports immigrant communities, asylum seekers, and international students.

At Manchester Metropolitan University, this three-year, full-time programme develops your understanding of English language and linguistics alongside the pedagogical knowledge, lesson planning skills, and practical teaching experience needed for a career in TESOL. You will study how English works as a language system, how it is acquired, and how it is best taught to learners with different backgrounds and goals. The programme also develops the broader academic skills in critical reading, research, and argument that English study provides.

A sandwich year and work placement opportunities are integrated, giving you professional experience in a language teaching or educational context before you graduate.

Graduates are well-placed for careers as English language teachers in the UK and internationally, in language schools, further education colleges, universities, corporate language training, and development organisations. Some go on to roles in curriculum development, materials writing, teacher training, or English language programme management. The combination of linguistic knowledge and teaching competence is also valued in translation, editing, and educational publishing.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in applied linguistics, TESOL, or education, developing their specialism further in a field where postgraduate qualifications are often expected for more senior roles.
