About this course

English and psychology is a combination that gives you two distinct but complementary lenses through which to understand human experience: literature explores how people represent inner life, emotion, and social reality through language and narrative, while psychology investigates the underlying cognitive, developmental, and social processes that shape how people think, feel, and behave. Together they make a pairing that is both intellectually rich and practically versatile.

At the University of Dundee, this four-year programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study in another country and to develop both disciplines in a different academic and cultural environment. You will engage with English literature from the medieval period to the present day, moving from foundational survey courses towards more focused study of the periods, authors, and critical approaches that interest you most. Alongside this you will study the core areas of psychology, including cognitive, developmental, social, and biological psychology, as well as research methods and statistics, which are essential tools of the discipline.

Dundee's programme allows you to develop genuine expertise in both fields rather than treating either as a minor adjunct to the other, and the year abroad enriches both strands.

With a typical tariff of 152 points, the programme attracts students with strong academic backgrounds who want the breadth that a combined degree provides. Graduates go on to careers in a wide range of fields, including education, clinical and counselling psychology, health services, publishing, journalism, human resources, marketing, and the creative industries. The combination of analytical writing skills and psychological understanding is valued by employers across many sectors.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study, whether in psychology, clinical training, education, creative writing, or literary studies.

Honestly, one of the best decisions I've made. The best part: small-group tutorials really push your thinking. If I'm honest, some seminar groups were too big for meaningful discussion. On the city β€” local cost of living is manageable if yo…
