English and Philosophy

English and philosophy is a combination that explores two of the humanities' most powerful and complementary modes of inquiry. English engages with the full range of writing in the English language, from its earliest origins to contemporary literature, asking how texts work, how they make meaning, and what they reveal about the human experience and the societies in which they were produced. Philosophy addresses the deepest questions about knowledge, mind, ethics, and the nature of reality, developing the capacity for precise analytical argument and conceptual clarity that is one of the humanities' most transferable intellectual achievements.

Together, they develop both a rich sensitivity to language and the rigorous analytical thinking that careful argument demands.

At Queen's University Belfast, this three-year full-time programme explores literatures in English in the widest possible sense, from Anglo-Saxon origins through contemporary Irish, British, and global literatures, situated in their historical, linguistic, cultural, and ideological contexts. The philosophy component covers key thinkers from the history of philosophy, including Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, and Marx, as well as formal logic and critical thinking, developing the tools of philosophical reasoning alongside historical scholarship. The typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects the academic demands of a strong combined programme.

You will develop close reading skills, philosophical analytical rigour, the capacity for sustained and carefully argued written analysis, and the cultural and historical knowledge that both disciplines build.

Graduates pursue careers in publishing, journalism, education, the civil service, law, the cultural sector, research, and any role that values the ability to read carefully, think precisely, and communicate with clarity.
