About this course

English and Multimedia Journalism is a degree that recognises the enduring partnership between literary and linguistic skill and the craft of reporting, storytelling and communication across digital and broadcast media. English study develops the ability to read closely, write with precision and clarity, and engage critically with how language shapes meaning and culture. Journalism adds the professional skills of news gathering, verification, storytelling across multiple platforms, and working to the rigorous standards and deadlines that professional media practice demands.

Studied together, they produce graduates who are both analytically sophisticated and practically ready for careers in contemporary media.

At Manchester Metropolitan University, this full-time three-year programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities, ensuring that your academic studies are complemented by real professional experience in journalism and media. The programme places you in one of the UK's most significant media cities, with proximity to MediaCityUK, home to major broadcasting organisations, providing an exceptional environment for building industry networks, gaining work experience and developing the professional contacts that media careers depend on. You will work on live events and current affairs, gain experience of working to briefs and professional deadlines, and develop the multimedia skills that modern journalism requires.

English and Multimedia Journalism graduates go on to careers in print, digital, broadcast and multimedia journalism, as well as in content creation, communications, public relations, publishing, documentary production and social media management. The analytical and writing skills developed through the English component of the degree are valued across a broad range of sectors beyond media, making this a degree with considerable career flexibility. Many graduates pursue postgraduate journalism qualifications or move directly into entry-level roles in regional, national or specialist media.
