English and Creative Writing

English and creative writing brings together the analytical study of literature and language with the practice of original composition. English provides the critical and historical context for understanding how texts are made, how they mean, and how they have functioned across different periods and cultures. Creative writing adds a practitioner's perspective, developing your craft as a writer across a range of forms, from fiction and poetry to non-fiction and screenwriting.

The two strands are mutually reinforcing: reading closely and analytically makes you a better writer, and the experience of producing original work deepens your understanding of what other writers are doing and how.

At Birmingham City University, this part-time programme is designed to accommodate students who need to balance study with other commitments. The curriculum develops your ability to write originally and with skill, working on narrative structure, character, setting, voice, and style in workshops led by experienced practitioners. Alongside the creative work, you will study literature and language analytically, developing your capacity to interpret and evaluate texts and to situate them in their critical and historical contexts.

The programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities, giving you professional experience in writing-related industries as part of the degree.
