English and Creative Writing and Spanish

English literature, creative writing, and Spanish is a combination that brings together three powerful ways of engaging with language and culture. Literary study develops your understanding of how meaning is made and communicated across different forms and periods. Creative writing invites you to develop your own voice and craft, to write with intention and with an audience in mind.

Spanish opens access to the literatures and cultures of Spain and Latin America, a vast and varied tradition encompassing some of the most influential writing in world literature. At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year full-time degree weaves these three strands together in a programme that is both intellectually demanding and practically creative.

You will engage with English literature across periods and genres, developing skills in close reading, critical argument, and cultural analysis. The creative writing component invites you to work in fiction, poetry, non-fiction, and other forms, with workshops providing feedback and developing your ability to revise and refine your work. Spanish is studied systematically, building language competence alongside an engagement with Hispanic literature and culture that enriches both your literary knowledge and your understanding of how different cultural traditions approach the same fundamental questions about human experience.

Graduates from this programme pursue careers in writing, publishing, journalism, education, translation, arts administration, and the cultural sector, as well as in roles in communications, public relations, and any field where clear, persuasive writing is central. The Spanish component adds significant value in careers with international dimensions. Many graduates also continue to postgraduate study in creative writing, literature, translation, or Spanish, deepening their expertise in one or more of the programme's strands.
